2020 has been rough, no doubt, and as we draw closer to the end of the first half, nothing can surprise us at this point, because everything that could possibly go wrong has done just that.

For this reason, it’s very easy for us to overlook the amazing things that have happened to us this year. This post is my way of ensuring I don’t forget. So here are 5 things I’m grateful for in 2020:

1 My roommate and friend, Halima beat cancer – I don’t know where to start with this, but Jesus hears prayers guys. He does.

2 I finally learnt how to tell ripe avocados from unripe ones – Upon being such a tasteless fruit, avocados still have the guts to be difficult. Why are some green even when they are ripe? What’s all the confusion for? I sha learnt how to tell, and now I’m over it.

3 2020 is the year I started to fully walk in purpose – My first read of the year was “The Purpose-Driven Life” by Rick Warren, and it was the most timely piece ever. I started to walk to the full extent of my purpose and I’m loving every bit of my journey so far.

4 My online community is the best I could have asked for – Numbers are not everything, but I’m happy to have them just in case. In light of walking in purpose, I started making these one-minute videos on Instagram in April, and it has brought incredible people to me. I can’t stress this enough, but they’ve made a huge impact on my 2020 so far. The comments, the love notes, the support, the cheers. Phewww, I’m beyond blessed.

5 The friendships I’ve built – On some days, I made connections. On other days, God really just decided to send me angels. Onyinyechi, Salem, Jessica (– yes I’m calling names) and everyone else whose name I can’t remember, you are God’s gift to me that I would never take for granted.

6 The Story School is up and running – Still on the topic of purpose, I started TSS to teach people how to increase the numbers on their social media pages and in their pockets by building their brands on Creative Storytelling and Effective Communication. Guess what? The first class sold out way before the early bird period was over. Then I had the second cohort, and now the third is happening soon. (When I was setting it up in May, I was very excited at the idea of 10 people signing up, but I had 28 registrations before registration even ended. Unreal!!!)

7 Weekend staycation in Cotonou with my girls – I’ve been so lazy to write about this trip here, but I took my first trip outside Nigeria in March on a girls’ trip with Omar and Subomi. It was amazing, and I’m glad I got the chance to do that before the world started to have a mind of its own. I hope to travel more as soon as it is safe again.

8 The support of my parents – I always hear creatives talk about how their parents deterred them from blogging or delving into the creative space, but I can’t relate. My parents have been super supportive of my journey and I can’t explain how much of a difference this makes.

9 My reading culture – I started this year intending to read 40 books, even though it was very laughable at the time. I’m not even close, but I love that reading has become a “habit” for me, plus the gems are mindblowing. I started and finished one book in a day in May for the first time, and since then, I’ve done that twice more. For someone that reads slower than Lagos traffic, that’s cause for praise. Halleluyah somebody!

10 Life & Health – The sole reason I can sit here and open my mouth waaaa to say all these things is that I have breath. Seeing how fleeting life can be, and realizing that God thought it good to keep me alive – my family, and everyone I care about, including you, reading this. I’m speechless because I don’t deserve it, but I have it anyway.

This is why I’m confident that the rest of the year would never catch me unfresh. 2020 cannot stain my white. We move abeg. Second half, here we come!
Who’s with me? What’s one thing you’re grateful for.

Till next time,
Alma.
